Are You Sure A Miniature Pinscher is For You?

The Miniature Pinscher is an alert and fun loving dog, with courage, spirit, and enthusiasm for everything he does. These vibrant and lively dogs can be difficult to control and train, and are best suited to those with experience in dog ownership and training. The Miniature Pinscher will bark to raise an alarm and this makes him an effective watchdog. They are intelligent and quick to learn, but need an owner that is assertive and confident, with a positive training manner. Considering his small size, the Miniature Pinscher is very bold, and is also observant and inquisitive. They can be territorial and dominant, and many also tend to bark a lot. Housebreaking may prove very difficult with some Miniature Pinschers.

The Miniature Pinscher does love to play and exercise, and has very high energy levels, so he is not suited to families that are not very active. He can be quite clingy, and thrives on affection and attention, so he also needs a family with plenty of time to dedicate to a pet. These dogs do not like to be handled roughly, and therefore is best suited to families with gentle children. They are usually wary around strangers, and can be dominant with other pets or even chase smaller ones. You should ensure that the Miniature Pinscher has a safe and secured area to play and exercise in, as these dogs can easily escape and are very good at climbing. Early socialization is important to ensure a stable personality.

A well - bred and properly socialized Miniature Pinscher is quite simply a "character". Spending only a few minutes with one makes it immediately apparent that these dogs really earn their title "King of Toys". You will find the Min Pin to be fearless, animated, intensely curious and always full of vim and vigor. Breeders have been quoted as saying "It's like living with a roomful of toddlers who never grow up" and "This is not a beginner's breed". Because of their high energy levels and inquisitiveness, the Min Pin bears close watching. They need to investigate everything and will go to great lengths to do so - which includes being "escape artists". You should find dynamite in a small package or something is wrong. Rarely does anyone own "just one" as they seem to grow on you and accumulate. Plan to spend many a night when you turn off the TV because your Min Pins are putting on a much better, and funnier, show.

Because the Miniature Pinscher has a short coat, the grooming element is minimal. It is necessary to give them a good, brisk brushing every few days to ensure a clean, shiny coat. Toenails need to be trimmed at least every 2 weeks to avoid having them grow too long and cause nail-trimming to become nail-cutting: a very unpleasant experience for dog and owner. Frequent bathing is discouraged as it tends to dry out the coat. It is better to take a warm, damp washcloth, using plain water, and wipe the dog down. Begin with the face, paying particular attention to the area under the eyes, and work back towards the tail. Done every few days, this will keep your dog clean and healthy. Make sure your dog is completely dry before a trip outside.

It is a natural tendency of the Miniature Pinscher to investigate anything and everything, so I can't stress enough it being abslutely essential that protective measures are taken. NEVER, EVER leave small objects laying on table tops where your Min Pin can get to them. This includes paper clips, coins, lipstick, pens, etc. Be extremely careful to never leave any medication out and be sure to retrieve any pill or capsule you may ever drop on the floor. Otherwise you may quickly find yourself in the emergency room of your veterinarian, with your Min Pin who found it first. GO OVER every inch of your yard and outdoor space your new Min Pin will have access to. If you find any hole or opening big enough to put your hand through - your Min Pin will find a way to fit through also. Fix it immediately. Additionally, make sure that any doors or windows in your home which are opened onto an area other than your secured yard have an extra screen, beyond what you normally have. Nothing is sadder than losing a Min Pin because he or she slipped out under your legs while you were signing for a package. Just about every person I know of that has had a minpin has had it happen at least once.

Books & Training Aids

Personally, I highly recommend training for your minpin. They are adorable and sweet and get into your heart real quick, and because of this, you may want to just let them do as they want because they are so "cute". Believe me, that cuteness can turn into a very stubborn little spoiled brat, and the minpin will push it to the max with you. Love your minpin, train your puppy and both of you will have a wonderful loving relationship filled with much fun and laughter.

More Minpin Fun

After you have done your basic obedience training with your puppy, and your minpin is now more focused, you can have some real fun with puppy. Miniature Pinschers are well known to be highly intelligent, clicker training is ideal. I watched one friend with her minpin, and no matter where on the property that little girl was, as soon as the clicker was heard, that little girl was hightailing to Mom! There are videos and books on clicker training out now. If you want to see how it is done, there are even a few listed on www.youtube.com Just use your search feature!

Another fun thing you and puppy can enjoy is agility training! Again, puppy has to be older for this as you don't want any damage to joints etc, and it is advised to take your dog into your vet and ensure you have the go-ahead. Agility training is available through trainers, however, if you just want to do some of it at home, here is a site where you can make "Do It Yourself" equipment. Do It Yourself Agility Equipment.
